Ascorbic acid activity in adrenal glands of rats with hypervitaminosis A.

چکیده
Toxic effects of administering large doses of vitamin A have been known for a long time to occur in human beings as well as in laboratory animals (Josephs, 1944; Knudson & Rothman, 1953). Polar bear liver is an unusually potent source of vitamin A and is toxic as a food even for Eskimo's dogs (Rodahl & Moore, 1943). I n hypervitaminosis A basal metabolism is lowered (Sadhu & Brody, 1947) and liver metabolic activity is depressed (Ray & Sadhu, 1959a, 6 ) . Excess intake of vitamin A causes an increased urinary excretion of ascorbic acid, so that the vitamin C reserve of the body can become exhausted and vitamin C deficiency can occur (And&& Gauzin, 1954). The investigation described here was planned as a study of the general activities of the body in hypervitaminosis A in relation to body-weight and the weights of different tissues and also to the oxidation of ascorbic acid in the adrenal gland.

Isolation of ascorbic acid 2-sulfate from selected rat organs.
Rats were injected subcutaneously with a5S042and [I-t4Clascorbic acid. A compound was isolated from rat liver and spleen which had chromatographic properties identical to synthetic ascorbic acid 2-sulfate (AAS). This compound gave a positive methanolic FeCla reaction, contained radioactive sulfur, and on hydrolysis it degraded to ~sSO42 and il~C]ascorbic acid. The isolated compound possessed id...
متن کاملEffects of Insulin and Ascorbic Acid on Inhibition of the Apoptosis in Hippocampus of Stz-Induced Diabetic Rats
Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate effects of insulin and ascorbic acid on rate of Caspase – 3 activity and DNA Laddering in hippocampus of STZ-induced diabetic rats.Materials and Methods: Thirty male Wistar rats in five groups, 6 in each group: one control group (group C) and four diabetic groups [diabetic control (group D), treatment with insulin (group I), with ascorbic acid (...

1. The effect ofdietary molybdenum on the growth rate and also on ascorbic acid metabolism in rats was studied. An excess of dietary molybdenum resulted in growth retardation and loss of weight. Tolerance to molybdenum was affected by the nature ofthe molybdenum salt administered. 2. Molybdenum ingestion altered certain aspects of ascorbic acid metabolism in rats. The conversion ofD-glucuronola...
متن کاملThe effect of audiogenic seizures in rats on the adrenal weight, ascorbic acid, cholesterol, and corticosteroids.
These experiments augment the investigations of adrenal hypertrophy in rats after audiogenic seizures reported by D’Amour and Shaklee (1). Rats were killed after single and repeated audiogenic seizures and the adrenals weighed. Ascorbic acid, cholesterol, and corticosteroids in the adrenals were determined calorimetrically. The data presented indicate that audiogenic seizures are stressful stim...
متن کاملCause of pituitary-adrenal failure in the riboflavin-deficient rat.
The discharge of cholesterol, ascorbic acid, and histologically demonstrable lipides from the adrenal glands is generally regarded as evidence of increased activity of these glands during stress (l-5). These changes were also produced upon injection of purified corticotropin (6). However, in the detailed study of Fortier et al. (7) it was shown that corticotropin (ACTH) alone cannot account for...
